Sometimes, the reasons for calling me are very basic:
The owner of a 9 year old dog called because his dog suddenly started peeing on the sofa for no apparent reason.
When I got in touch with the animal, she told me that her owner was never there anymore and that she could no longer do her job of watching over him.
The first thing I did was clear up the misunderstanding that she is NOT the one taking care of her human, it should be the other way around.
When I passed on the information to the owner, he told me that he was starting his own business and was indeed very busy. Although he had a dog walking service to take his dog out, he himself came home late, changed into his sports clothes, left to the gym and then came home to fall asleep very soon. There was little time left over for the dog - human relationship.
We went over their various needs and he started spending more quality time with his dog, going for walks with her before and after work and only leaving to the gym, once he had had some quality time with his four legged companion.
Not only did the dog never pee on the sofa again, their relationship improved greatly and that, combined with more walks, was also very beneficial to the human and helped evacuate the stress he had been accumulating at work.
Other times, the animals have a message for their people:
One day a very distressed lady called because her cat had disappeared. This happens often with cats, especially during the warmer months of the year and cats do tend to be very independant creatures, but this lady assured me that her cat was 3 years old and had never strayed for more than a few hours a day.
When I got in touch with the cat, she showed me a male figure and told me that there were tensions at home and that she would come home when these two started communicating again.
I had no information on the family status of this lady, but transmitted the information as it was given to me. I remember there being a lengthy silence on the phone…..and then the woman told me that this did make sense to her.
The next day, she called me to say, that she and her husband had sat down the previous evening and had a long chat. They planned a vacation together to work on their relationship. The following morning, the cat had returned.
And sometimes, there is a medical aspect where I can be of help.
I was called about a cat who needed an operation of the pancreas. Her human just asked me to make sure the cat knew that she was not being abandoned, but only needed this medical intervention for her own well being and would spend a few days in the hospital before coming back home to her family.
When I got in touch with the cat, I immediately felt that there was a problem in the kidneys….and felt nothing around the pancreas. Other than that, the cat was fine with a short stay in the hospital knowing that she would return home afterwards.
I then proceeded to inform the cat’s owner of my observations. She found them very interesting because another Vet she had consulted three weeks earlier, had also suggested the kidneys be looked at . She therefore insisted this be done; the cat’s kidneys were treated, her pancreas was fine and she never required the operation.
